ICON PROJECT

A Study of Visual Comprehension and Brand Unification

Developing a flexible grid-based system and the resulting creation of 275+ new icons.

After the Logitech rebranding effort, it was discovered that Logitech lacked a comprehensive icon library, and with multiple designers, brand managers, and business groups, it was easy to see why. Each icon would be treated on a transactional basis, with inconsistent fills, stroke weights, and various containing shapes.

In order to remedy this situation, the first step was to impose a full audit of all the packing and icons used within the last decade. A list was formulated, organizing and catagorizing each mark based on the individual business groups. Once the information was extracted, a grid-based template would serve as a foundation for unifying the work.

One by one, each icon was removed from it’s restrictive containing shape, and systematically redesigned, utilizing only four stoke weights, removing all fills, and limiting the use of rounded corners for instances where it would ultimately enhance the visual communication and overall comprehension.

Being detail-oriented and maintaining consistency goes a long when developing or elevating brand. It serves as an indicator, letting consumers know that every aspect of design was considered. The icon project concluded with a comprehensive library of over 275+ new and unified icons.
